Alabaster Museum of Castellina Marittima

The museum is part of an ecomuseum dedicated to alabaster extraction and processing in Castellina Marittima, Santa Luce and Volterra. The setting wants to give the visitor the perception of being in a real quarry. It hosts historical documentation and some tools used to process the alabaster. In the archaeological section there are findings which come from the municipality. Recently, a new contemporary art collection has been added.

Bombardieri Palace Civic - Archeological Museum

+39 0586 724288It was founded in 1955 from the local archaeological association, whose purpose was to house outfits from some graves found in Castiglioncello and belonging to the Hellenistic age. Afterwards it was enlarged with finds from the municipality’s territory. The majority of the pieces were discovered during the excavation in St. Gaetano district in Vada, which was carried out by the association between 1957 and 1979. The museum was renovated and inaugurated in 1996; it is located in Bombardieri palace. It tells the story of the first settlements and the exploitation of the coast’s resources between Castiglioncello and the Cecina river as well as the hinterland, from prehistory to the middle ages. The highly didactic exhibition is enriched with reconstructions, scale models and multimedia tools; it is aimed at introducing to the area’s places of historic and cultural interest, and it suggests itineraries which allow the visitor discover the local traditions in a variegated and fascinating landscape.

The archaeological park is located on a small hill, whose natural landscape makes the visit even more pleasant, especially in spring and summer. According to the tradition, the Roman villa has been identified as the senator Decius Albina Cecina’s one; built in the 1st century b.C, it was still is in use, with different transformations, until the 5th century a.C. You cannot miss the perfectly preserved underground cistern, providing water throughout vaulted channels to the villa’s quarters.
