The Pagani de Marchi estate was established in 1996, on the land surrounding a holiday house. The decision was to create a vineyard with Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The choice, based on soil analysis, turned out to be well justified.
Immediately, with the first vinification, we had wines of really high intensity. We decided to make three 100% varietal wines in order to emphasize the character of each of them. The evaluations and the scores of the experts and specialized press have been extremely gratifying.
The care and attention devoted continuously to the vineyard, and the untiring and meticulous work in the cellar have been fundamental to receive an extremely positive welcome from the market.
The human dimension, with the constant presence of the family, wine experts and qualified workers have enabled us to maintain a continuous high level of quality during this period.
Over the years, the rigorous selection of the best grapes, has allowed us to bring up the quality of the three unblended wines to a high level of excellence, and given us room to make 2 blended wines, still with same grapes, but with different grape percentages and ageing techniques.
In 2009 we added to our family of "reds" a white wine based on Vermentino grapes. The positive response from the market allows us to establish it as the sixth member in our family.
The ever strong desire to make wines, not only of high quality, but expressing also all natural potential of the local climate and terroir, drove us, from the year 2009, to grow the grapes in our vineyard according to the principles and the rules of biological agriculture. The most important markets for our wines beside Italy, are Switzerland, USA, Russia, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands and Japan.
The vines of the estate are planted in about 6 hectares, on the hills underneath the village of Casale Maritimo at about 200 metres above sea level. The land where the vines are located is composed of sedimentary clays of the Pliocene era that remind one of the blue-grayish soil of French Pomerol.
The harvest usually begins during the first ten days of September for Merlot, in the third ten days of the same month for Sangiovese and in the first days of October for Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are directly selected in the vineyard and then they are carried to the cellar for immediate vinification.
